Chillers are essential components in HVAC systems and are used to cool water, which is circulated to provide air conditioning. Several parameters are critical for monitoring and ensuring optimal performance.

Leaving and Entering Water Temperature: These two temperature points indicate how efficiently the chiller is cooling the water. The entering water temperature (EWT) refers to the water temperature as it enters the evaporator, while the leaving water temperature (LWT) reflects the temperature after it has been cooled. Ideally, the leaving water temperature should be lower than the entering water temperature, showing that the chiller is effectively transferring heat out of the system.

Pressure: Chillers operate under varying pressure conditions, including suction and discharge pressures. Suction pressure refers to the low-pressure side, where refrigerant absorbs heat from the water. Discharge pressure occurs on the high-pressure side, where the refrigerant releases heat to the condenser. Monitoring both pressures is vital to prevent potential issues such as leaks or system inefficiencies.

Expansion Valve Position: This controls the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator. Its position impacts the amount of refrigerant and, therefore, the cooling capacity. A correctly set expansion valve ensures optimal cooling.

Running Compressors: The compressor is the core of the chiller system, maintaining pressure differentials that drive refrigerant through the cycle. Multiple compressors may run simultaneously, depending on the cooling demand. Monitoring their operation is crucial to ensure energy efficiency.
