On 12 July 1962, Walter Reginald Bett (8 April 1903 - 17 November 1968) delivered the 25th Oslerian oration on 'The Epitaph of Adrian's Horse' to The Osler Club of London. Drawing on well over 30-years-worth of scholarship relating to his subject, Bett delighted his audience on William Osler’s 113th birthday, and covered a diverse array of subjects relating to memorialisation in medicine.

The presentation constituted his life work and was evidently written for posterity – it was fully recorded on the day and 2 magnetic reels were stored in the archives of the Osler Club of London which Bett founded with his colleague Alfred White Franklin (1905-1984) in 1928. In May of this year, the recording was digitized for the first time, and is today released to mark the 50th anniversary of Walter Bett's passing (17 November 2018). Preliminary remarks by the Club's President Dr Harold Avery (1903-1972), and a concluding tribute to Bett by his esteemed colleague Dr Arthur Dickson Wright (1897-1976) are included in the recording.

The audio of the oration gives precious insight into Walter Bett's personality and his relations to his peers. His boroque style of writing is evident throughout the presentation, as is his sense of humour. Most enchanting however, is his spectacular way with words, each carefully chosen and delivered to perfection.
