What’s super interesting about the 1928 exercise chart is that its a rare glimpse into Joe Pilates’ early ideas for reformer exercises as well as apparatus.

On the chart, Joe archived his first 3 Footwork exercises as we know them today- but one difference is that the arms are crossed.

Upon a closer look we can see that the reason why Joe’s arms are crossed is because the reformer straps are laying on the mat by his sides, therefore leaving no room for his arms!

It seems this particular early version of the reformer did not have hooks for the straps. Evidently, as Joe continued to refine his method and apparatus, he added the hooks to keep the straps out of the way.

⭐️About Elaine Ewing:
Elaine is owner of Rhinebeck Pilates, and a third generation, certified Authentic Pilates teacher and Certified Teacher of Teachers through the New York Pilates Studio®. Elaine is also the owner of many pieces of original equipment from both Joseph Pilates’ 8th Avenue Studio and Carola Trier’s original studio, all of which can be found within Rhinebeck Pilates.
