Food Prices, Inflation, and Trade Disruptions: Canada in a World of Shocks

Food prices in Canada have risen sharply in recent years, driven by a mix of global shocks, domestic pressures, and shifting trade dynamics. This talk explores how energy costs, fertilizer markets, and supply chain disruptions have fed into inflation; how tariff disputes and trade wars reshape costs for households and producers; and how policies, from climate measures to retaliatory tariffs, interact with these trends. Drawing on recent research and current events, the discussion will highlight the complex links between global markets, Canadian agriculture, and the prices consumers ultimately face.
