One of the most popular ways to crack a person’s account remains password reuse.

It’s when someone takes a password from a person’s single account and uses it to access other accounts on different websites. This time though, Cybernews research reveals that password reuse may be even possible between different people.

In 2022, “123456” is still one of the most used passwords. Amongst 56 millions breach and leaked passwords this year, this particular one occurred in 111,417 cases.

A lot of passwords are the same, and this is a problem. Not only because they can be reused, but also because passwords are often hashed when they are saved. Unlike encryption, hashing can be predicted with a big enough sample size, and 56 million of leaked passwords is a big enough sample size.

To make things worse, hashing algorithms do not improve fast enough, letting cybercriminals thoroughly examine and exploit them. Relying on developers to protect your passwords is not the way to go anymore, so I recommend looking into software that can help you, like a password manager.
