A playthrough of Capcom's 1996 3D versus-fighter for the Sony PlayStation, Star Gladiator Episode 1: Final Crusade.

Played through on difficulty level 6 with June.

As their very first in-house effort at developing a 3D fighter, Capcom's Star Gladiator didn't come out too badly. The fighting engine has an array of the typical Capcom "systems" governing things like reversals and combos, the graphics are super-smoothly animated and clean looking, and the controls are extremely solid. I'm also a huge fan of the display that shows up during a combo to show what inputs have been accepted - it's a big help in getting the feel for the game's rhythm and mastering the combo system.

Much of this reflects its impressive showing as a port of an arcade game, stemming from the fact that the arcade original was developed for the ZN-1 hardware, which was essentially a PS1 beefed up with more RAM.

It's not really my favorite Capcom fighter - it's a bit bland with it's boring characters (they may look fun and odd on the character select screen, but they lack any real personality) and its relative lack of special moves. Still, as an early 32-bit first attempt at a genre, it's a respectable title that can be fun in short bursts. Just don't expect Rival Schools or Street Fighter EX levels of awesome.
