🌙 The Story of Ganesha and the Moon

According to Hindu scriptures, once Lord Ganesha had eaten plenty of sweets and was riding on his mouse. Suddenly, the mouse stumbled seeing a snake, and Ganesha fell down. His stomach burst open and all the sweets spilled out. Ganesha quickly tied his belly with the snake and sat back on his vehicle.

The Moon God (Chandra) saw this scene and laughed loudly, insulting Ganesha. In anger, Lord Ganesha cursed Chandra: “Anyone who sees you on Ganesh Chaturthi will face Mithya Dosha – false accusations and dishonor.”

Chandra realized his mistake and begged for forgiveness. Out of compassion, Ganesha modified the curse: “The curse will remain, but if anyone chants my name or listens to the story of the Syamantaka jewel, the dosha will be removed.”

🙏 Meaning of the Belief

Even today, many devotees avoid looking at the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi, especially in the evening. It is believed that looking at the moon can bring misunderstandings, quarrels, or false blame.

If someone accidentally sees the moon, they can chant the Syamantaka Jewel Mantra:
"Simhaḥ Prasenaṁavadheet, Simho Jāmbavata Hataḥ…",
which is said to remove the curse.
