Описание к видео The Mechanic's Pit finding generations old rubbish in the Granary/Garage DIY

In this video I finally tackle the giant hole that sits right in the middle of our garage space. Originally It had been a mechanic's pit for Gentleman Jim Kielty of Ballymote fame. He owned the first taxi company in the town and used to travel around in a model T ford! Later as he got older and less active with the cars he started to fill the mechanic's pit with rubbish so that his children wouldn't fall into it while playing. What a gent. Anyway, I wanted to get to the bottom of the pit to find out if it was wet or dry. If it was dry I would keep it, and make a better cover for the hole, one you could walk on. But if it was wet... I didn't have a plan... as you'll see if you watch the video long enough.

A mechanic's pit, also known as an inspection pit, is a narrow trench-like structure built into the ground of an automotive garage. It provides a convenient and safe place for mechanics to work on the underside of vehicles. These pits are typically covered with metal grates and are located in the middle of the garage's service bays. Over time, debris, waste, and other materials can accumulate in these pits, causing a host of problems for mechanics, garage owners, and the environment.

The kind of rubbish you would find in a mechanic's pit is varied and can include the following:

Motor oil: Mechanics use motor oil to lubricate moving parts and prevent wear and tear. However, some of this oil can spill onto the ground and find its way into the pit. Over time, the oil can build up and create a toxic environment for mechanics and the environment.

Grease: Like motor oil, grease is used to lubricate parts of the vehicle. However, it can also accumulate in the pit and create a slippery surface, which can lead to falls and injuries.

Brake dust: When brakes are applied, the friction between the brake pads and rotors creates dust. This dust can settle on the ground and be swept into the pit. Brake dust contains tiny particles of metal that can be harmful to the environment.

Coolant: Vehicles use coolant to regulate the temperature of the engine. However, leaks can occur, and the coolant can find its way into the pit. Coolant is toxic and can cause skin irritation and other health problems.

Rust: Over time, vehicles can develop rust on their undercarriage. When mechanics work on these vehicles, rust can fall into the pit and accumulate. Rust is not only unsightly but can also be a safety hazard.

Debris: Mechanics may accidentally drop tools, bolts, and other small items into the pit. These items can accumulate over time and create a cluttered and unsafe work environment.

Garbage: Garbage, such as food wrappers and empty bottles, can accumulate in the pit. This not only creates an unpleasant work environment but can also attract pests and rodents.

It is a good idea to fill in a mechanic's pit for several reasons, including:

Environmental concerns: The accumulation of toxic materials, such as motor oil and coolant, in the pit can be harmful to the environment. These materials can seep into the ground and contaminate soil and water sources.

Safety concerns: The accumulation of debris and waste in the pit can create a hazardous work environment for mechanics. Grease and oil can make the surface slippery, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. Tools and other small items can create tripping hazards.

Increased efficiency: Filling in the pit can free up space in the garage, allowing for more efficient use of the area. Mechanics can use lifts or jacks to work on vehicles, which can be safer and more efficient than working in a pit.

Cost savings: Filling in the pit can save garage owners money on maintenance and repairs. Pits require regular cleaning and maintenance to ensure they are safe and functional. By filling in the pit, garage owners can avoid these costs and invest in other areas of the business.

In conclusion, a mechanic's pit can accumulate a variety of rubbish over time, including toxic materials, debris, and waste. Filling in the pit can address environmental and safety concerns, increase efficiency, and save garage owners money.
