Max Verstappen seized his eighth consecutive pole at Imola, equalling the record of Ayrton Senna 30 years on from Senna's passing at the same circuit. It was a tensely-fought pole, too - as Peter Windsor details in this video. The softest tyres in the Pirelli range made it impossible to complete three optimum sectors; and the two McLaren-Mercedes were almost a perfect match for the Red Bull-Honda in terms of grip, balance and top speed. Max it was, though, who was quickest by the finest of margins. Australia's Oscar Piastri was second for McLaren, ahead of his more experienced team-mate, the Miami GP winner, Lando Norris. Ferrari, still slightly lacking in top speed, qualified fourth and fifth.
