They want to ask for an impunity from duty( lagaan) but the Raja is busy watching the British play a match of justice. A youthful planter named Bhuvan incites horselaugh by mocking the game. This is eavesdropped by the vicious company captain, Andrew Russell, who feels slighted. He challenges Bhuvan to a game of justice in return for cancelling their duty for three times, a bet that Bhuvan accepts. Despite demurrers from the vill, Bhuvan gathers a many who support him, and together, they crouch outside the cantonment grounds trying to understand the game. Elizabeth, Captain Russell's visiting youngish family, approaches them, offering to help. She wants to educate them the game so that the match is played fairly. Bhuvan is pleased, and the group starts meeting Elizabeth at grounds outside the vill to learn the game. Word spreads in the vill and others are inspired to join Bhuvan's platoon. When Captain Russell finds out, he's incensed at Elizabeth. She refuses to stop helping the townies, hiding the fact that she's intimately falling in love with Bhuvan. Gauri, the son of the city croaker
, Ishwar, knows all this and is agonized because she's the one in love with Bhuvan. Bhuvan latterly proposes to Gauri. Meanwhile, Captain Russell is told by his elderly officers to prepare to pay the fiefdom's levies out of his own fund should he lose the match. Back in the vill, Bhuvan is floundering to find an eleventh player. At a practice game, he fields a ball that's returned to him by Kachra, a cripple who lives outside the vill. As the ball bounces, the spin carries it in another direction. Bhuvan incontinently sees value and adds Kachra to the platoon. He resists pressure again from the townies, who are concerned over playing with an untouchable, and manages to move them. On the day of the match, the British club first and score heftily, Captain Russell hitting a century. They're eventually dismissed by Kachra's excellent spin bowling. When Bhuvan's platoon starts fur, they lose quick lattices and soon half the platoon is out. Facing defeat, Bhuvan batons steadily and is backed by others in closing the gap to their target. With five runs demanded, he hits six runs off the last ball, in veritably dramatic fashion, and wins the match for the townies. As the crowd erupts in festivity, Elizabeth seeks out Bhuvan but turns down when she sees him locked in an grasp with Gauri the girl Bhuvan loved. Soon, the British cantonment is disbanded and Captain Russell is transferred to Africa. In the following weeks, the townies watch the departing procession as one caravan stops in front of Bhuvan. Elizabeth steps out to say a final farewell to him. She returns to England, carrying an unrequited love for Bhuvan with her. Meanwhile, the growers of the vill carouse in the recently amped thunderstorm.
