Dr Kaylene Henderson came to speak with the team at Storypark about anxiety in early childhood settings. She also broke down the most common anxiety disorders in children:
Specific phobias
Separation anxiety disorder
Generalised anxiety disorder
Obsessive compulsive disorder

Separation anxiety disorder:
Tends to occur later (7-8 year olds)
Might follow parents around the house
Reluctant to sleep in their own bed
Nightmares about permanent separation
Headaches, tummy aches, not feeling like eating

Specific phobias:
Fear of a specific object or situation despite posing little threat

Generalised anxiety disorder:
Worrying about anything and everything
Constantly worried
complaining about physical upsets

Obsessive compulsive disorder:
Obsessions: Random intrusive thoughts that are distressing
Compulsions: Behaviours or rituals to neutralise upsetting thoughts (tapping, checking things, counting, moving in a particular way)
