A brief description of the pharmacology of the most common treatments for Parkinson's Disease - a relatively common neurological condition characterised by motor symptoms, including tremors, rigidity, akinesia and postural instability. This occurs due to the accumulation of alpha-synuclein, which forms levy bodies in certain regions of the brain - most prominently in the substantial nigra pars compacta. This causes the neurons that emanate from this area to degenerate, resulting in a reduction in striata dopamine, thus causing the dyskinesia. Parkinson's disease also presents a variety of non-motor symptoms, including anosmia and confusion, but these often occur when the disease is more progressed, and the neuronal degradation has spread to wider areas of the brain. 

Drugs discussed in this video include L-DOPA, DOPA decarboxylase inhibitors (carbidopa, benzerazide), COMT inhibitors (entacapone, tolcapone), MAO-B inhibitors (selegiline, rasagiline), and dopamine D2 agonists (ropinirole, pramipexole).
