Instead of one massive 50,000-ton satellite requiring armies of astronauts, we now have modular systems assembled by robots, laser swarms that scale gradually, and controversial orbital mirrors that reflect sunlight at night.

*CASSIOPEIA - THE MODULAR APPROACH*

Cassiopeia represents the next generation of solar power satellites. At 4 kilometers long and 1.7 kilometers wide, it's much smaller than the 1970s design but far more efficient. Twisted mirror pairs concentrate sunlight onto ultra-thin solar panels weighing just 240 grams per square meter—compared to heavy glass panels from the original concept.

These modern panels use multiple layers of semiconductors to capture 39% of the solar spectrum, more than triple the efficiency of 1970s technology. They're mounted on thin plastic sheets instead of rigid glass, dramatically reducing weight and launch costs.

The microwave transmission antennas are integrated in a helical configuration that can always point at Earth without moving parts, eliminating mechanical failure points. The entire structure is modular—components snap together without welding, designed for robotic assembly rather than human workers.

Electric thrusters move modules into geostationary orbit with 10x better efficiency than chemical rockets. This proven technology is used on satellites today. The completed Cassiopeia weighs 1,348 tons and outputs 1 gigawatt—at the same weight, the 1970s design would produce just 100 megawatts.

Total launch cost: $4-5 billion. Full project cost including ground infrastructure: $20 billion over a decade. This approaches the cost of nuclear power plants but still needs further reduction for mass adoption.

*LASER SWARMS - THE SCALABLE SOLUTION*

The swarm approach abandons the single giant satellite entirely. Instead, thousands of smaller satellites—each about the size of existing geostationary satellites—work together as a distributed network.

Each satellite has its own solar panels, electric thrusters, and positioning systems. But instead of microwave transmission, they use infrared lasers with centimeter-scale mirrors to focus beams on specialized ground receivers.

The receivers are solar panels tuned to the laser's wavelength, converting 60-80% of the beam back into electricity. Laser intensity is approximately 1,000 watts per square meter—identical to midday sunlight, making it completely safe for people and wildlife in the beam path.
