Ford Mustang GTD Detroit's Unique Muscle Car Tests at the Nurburgring

The Ford Mustang GTD is set to redefine the muscle car genre. Unlike any other vehicle from Detroit, this road-going version of the Mustang GT3 race car has been spotted undergoing rigorous testing at the iconic Nurburgring.

When Ford introduced the Mustang GTD, the company made it clear that it aimed to achieve a remarkable lap time at the Nurburgring. The automaker is confident that the GTD can complete the Nordschleife loop in under seven minutes. As preparations for an official attempt later this year intensify, testing is currently in full swing.

Spy photographers have captured footage from various points along the 12.9-mile course, and even at this preliminary stage, the Mustang GTD appears remarkably composed through the corners. The vehicle’s performance promises to be a significant milestone in automotive history.

Occasionally, the supercharger whine from the 5.2-liter V8 engine can be heard, adding to the vehicle's allure. The deep exhaust note is unmistakably American, exuding a sense of raw power and tradition. With over 800 horsepower driving the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle, the Mustang GTD boasts impressive specifications. The transaxle, positioned at the rear with the drive wheels, ensures a near 50/50 weight distribution for optimal handling.

Adding to the race-inspired design, the pushrod suspension is also mounted at the rear and can be seen through a plexiglass window where the back seat would typically be. This setup is not just functional but also visually striking, offering a glimpse of the engineering prowess behind the Mustang GTD.

Priced at an estimated $325,000, the Mustang GTD is the most expensive Mustang ever produced. However, if it achieves a sub-seven-minute lap time, it will become the fastest American production car to ever lap the Nurburgring. This achievement would also place it among the fastest production cars globally, solidifying the Mustang GTD’s place in automotive legend.
