Took a morning drive across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge recently. This is a full bridge drive. Maryland has many bridges but this by far my favorite. There is a bridge/tunnel at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay that spans 17.6 miles. One day I’ll make it down there to video but for now let’s take a drive across this 4 mile bridge that was first built in 1952 in July. At this point it was a two lane bridge with one lane going each way east & west. They later added a second bridge with three lanes in June 1973. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge now runs 2 lanes east and 3 lanes west. From time to time they open the third lane of the westbound bridge to eastbound traffic. It’s a cool experience driving against traffic that high up over the Chesapeake. This bridge at its highest reaches 186 feet above the Chesapeake Bay.
