Microsoft Excel Tutorial: AutoComplete vs Validation - Community Solutions.

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this episode, we're going to dive into the world of Excel and explore the differences between AutoComplete and Validation. Last week, in episode 713, I discussed the frustration of not being able to quickly jump to a specific item in data validation. But thanks to the amazing community, I received three great emails with a similar solution that I had never thought of before. So, in today's video, I want to share these workarounds with you and give a big thank you to Laura, Howard, and Eric for sending them in.

The first solution, suggested by Laura and Howard, involves creating a drop-down list in a cell and then copying that list to the cell directly above it. This way, the data validation will still work for those who prefer using a mouse, but for those who prefer typing, the AutoComplete feature will kick in as soon as a unique entry is typed. And if you don't want the list to be visible, you can simply hide the row and no one will even know it's there.

Eric's email also had a similar idea, but with a couple of additional tips. He suggested turning off the in-cell drop-down for data validation and using the Input Message tab to explain the valid values. Then, by hiding the row with the list, the AutoComplete feature will still work and the input tooltip will display the valid items as you type. This is a clever way to hide the list without any blank spaces and make the AutoComplete feature even more user-friendly.
