So, you decided it's time for puppies?

Dog Pregnancy is not that complicated, but there are things we need to keep in mind

A canine pregnancy lasts approximately 58 to 65 days

Make sure that your dog is checked and, if necessary, treated for worms and other diseases before the pregnancy

Let's take a look at dog pregnancy stages week by week

Week One and Two

Soon after mating, the cells begin to develop, grow and separate, and the tiny new embryos descend into the uterus for the remainder of the period

Week three

The embryos will begin to implant into the uterus, where they will receive the vital nutrients and life support

Week four

The eyes and spine of the fetuses begin to develop, and their faces begin to take shape. The fetuses grow to around 1.5 centimeters long during week four

Week five

The fetuses develop their male or female sexes during this time, and your dog will increase in size considerably

Week six

Your bitch will have a noticeably larger tummy, and her pregnancy will be obvious to most people. Her tummy will grow on a daily basis

Week seven

Your bitch will begin shedding the hair on her belly in preparation for the birth - this is totally normal

Week eight

Your puppies could be born at any time from now onwards, so be prepared! Your bitch will probably begin 'nesting' at this stage

Week nine

Birth is imminent, and your bitch should be well established in her whelping bed by now. Make sure you are ready.


If everything goes according to plan, you will soon enjoy the company of newborn puppies.
