The 'Sussudio' Bass Riff! - The Incredible Time & Technique Of Leland Sklar

Yesterday I had the great pleasure and honour of sitting down to interview one of the most recorded and successful bass players in history. The great, bearded one himself, Mr Leland Sklar.

Lee has been a super sideman to the stars for over 50 years now and has played with literally everyone. He's an absolute sweetheart of a man and we had a lovely chat about all things bass that I’ll be releasing here on the channel next week.

As a precusor to that interview I thought I’d give you a glimpse into a little bit of Leland’s chops and bulletproof timing with a look at one of the bass lines he has to play on a regular basis while playing with Phil Collins. It’s the huge hit song: Sussudio.

This was originally a synth line but Lee learned it and plays it in the live concerts to add a more organic feel to proceedings. This is a great example of how learning synth bass lines can push your playing because they’re not written with the instrument in mind. They tend to be very odd and awkward and Sussudio can be really tough to keep up because of the speed and syncopated 16th note rhythms.
