In May 2024, Toronto Public Health hosted Diverse Dialogues: Stigma & Breaking Barriers, an event drawing more than 100 attendees to learn about stigma and its impact on health and health decisions.

Dr. Notisha Massaquoi: Assistant Professor, Department of Health & Society, U of T Scarborough
Michel Rodrigue: President & CEO, Mental Health Commission of Canada

Following the Speaker Spotlights, Dr. Eileen de Villa hosted a thought-provoking panel discussion. Key takeaways included the need to ring the alarm on Black health disparities and working with Black communities for change; the impacts of othering, dehumanization and the impacts of colonialism on Indigenous peoples on Turtle Island; and the need for a call from health leaders to lead the call to invest in mental health education, community support networks and policies that prioritize prevention.
