Prior to the implementation of the Kidney Allocation System (KAS), blood type B candidates had a longer wait time for kidney transplantation. In 2014, the KAS authorized kidney transplant programs to list eligible candidates with blood type B to receive kidneys from deceased donors with compatible subtypes of A or AB blood groups. This change in practice ultimately improves transplant rates among disadvantaged blood group B patients. Unfortunately, an overwhelming majority of transplant programs have not taken advantage of this policy change due to a few anticipated challenges, including patient eligibility. During this webinar, we will review successful strategies for determining eligibility of ABO-B patients to receive non-A1 (A2) kidney offers as well as the potential impact that this may have on transplant wait time for kidney recipients.
