The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid combines the best of two worlds: It has the latest Toyota technology for hybrid-electric vehicles and at the same time offers high performance and driving dynamics, with an easily usable electric capacity, but without range worries and the need to recharge .

With experience from two generations of the Prius plug-in hybrid, Toyota was in the best position to develop a powerful new drive for the RAV4. With a system output of 306 PS / 225 kW *, it enables an acceleration of 0-100 km / h in just 6.2 seconds, better than all conventionally powered competitors. In addition, it offers best-in-class values ​​for consumption and emissions: Toyota's pre-homologation value according to the WLTP standard resulted in CO2 emissions of less than 29 g / km *. No plug-in hybrid AWD SUV in this class achieves such values.

The new RAV4 plug-in hybrid is built on the Toyota GA-K platform, with the advantage of the hybrid battery placed under the floor. It is also equipped with the intelligent electrical AWD-i all-wheel drive as standard.
Toyota has succeeded in significantly increasing the electric performance of the hybrid drive compared to the normal RAV4 hybrid. A new high-capacity lithium-ion battery has been developed for this purpose and the system control has been equipped with an improved boost converter. The 2.5-liter petrol engine is based on that of the normal RAV4 Hybrid, with some modifications with regard to the performance requirements of the plug-in hybrid system.

The result is not only strong acceleration, but also a greater all-electric range with zero fuel consumption and emissions. Four selectable driving settings enable a seamless transition from hybrid to purely electric driving. With the new EV mode, the RAV4 plug-in hybrid can travel more than 65 km * with just electric power (provided the battery charge and driving conditions allow), further than any other plug-in hybrid SUV and over the average European commuter distance of 50 km a day. In addition, a speed of up to 135 km / h can be achieved without switching on the petrol engine, even at full acceleration.


The compact dimensions of the lithium-ion battery allow it to be placed under the vehicle floor. Thanks to the minimal disruption, the cargo space offers a generous 520 liters of volume. The battery installation low down also keeps the vehicle's center of gravity low, which benefits driving stability and driving comfort.
In pursuit of efficiency in every detail, Toyota has adopted the heat pump air conditioning system, as it was introduced as a world first with the second generation of the Prius plug-in hybrid - specially adapted for the new SUV, with a hot water circuit like in the RAV4 Hybrid. In addition, the battery is cooled by the cooling element of the air conditioning system.

This system is far more efficient than using engine heat or electrical heating systems that heat the interior with heat from the ambient air.
Details outside and inside give the new SUV a sophisticated, sporty look. The front features black bezels for the special grill grille and the headlight extensions, and a new metal finish on the lower bumper section underlines the width and powerful presence of the vehicle. New 18- and 19-inch rims feature contrasting brightly shining and gray or black areas. while at the rear a metal-colored finish can be seen under the rear window and a black cover under the bumper.

The standard equipment of the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid also includes 18-inch alloy wheels, trailer stabilization control, electric window lifters in both rows of seats, light and rain sensors, the keyless smart key access system, two-zone automatic air conditioning, steering wheel and front seat heating and rear and electrically adjustable, heated and folding exterior mirrors. The central control element is the Toyota Touch infotainment system with its nine-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, DAB + digital radio, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as MyT Connected Services. Headlights, daytime running lights and taillights are LED versions.
