In Adobe Photoshop, when you insert an image or file into your project, you have two main options: Place Linked and Place Embedded. Both options have their uses, but they function differently. Here's an explanation of each:
1. Place Linked
When you Place Linked an image or file into your Photoshop project, the image is not physically embedded into the Photoshop file itself. Instead, Photoshop creates a link to the original file on your computer or network.
Characteristics:
File Size: The Photoshop document (.PSD) remains smaller because the actual image is not saved within the PSD file.
Updates: If the original image or file is updated (for example, if you edit it in another program like Illustrator), the linked image in your Photoshop document is also updated automatically.
Dependency: The Photoshop file relies on the external file. If the external file is moved, renamed, or deleted, Photoshop will not be able to display the linked image unless you re-link it.
Editing: You can still transform the linked image in Photoshop (resize, rotate, etc.), but the actual contents of the image need to be edited in the original software where it was created.
Use Case:
When to use: This option is useful when you're working with files that might change, such as a company logo, and you want all your Photoshop documents to reflect any updates made to the linked file without having to replace it manually.
2. Place Embedded
When you Place Embedded an image or file, Photoshop physically embeds a copy of the image into the Photoshop document. The image is stored within the PSD file itself.
Characteristics:
File Size: The Photoshop document becomes larger since it includes the embedded image.
Independence: The embedded image is now independent of the original file. Even if the original file is deleted, moved, or renamed, it won’t affect your Photoshop project.
No Updates: If the original image is updated outside of Photoshop, the embedded version in Photoshop will not reflect those changes.
Editing: The embedded image can be edited in Photoshop as a Smart Object, and the changes remain within the document.
Use Case:
When to use: This option is ideal when you want your Photoshop file to be self-contained and not dependent on external files. It’s useful when sharing the file with others, or when you need to ensure that the design won’t be affected by changes to the original source files.
Key Differences:
File Size: Place Embedded increases the size of your Photoshop file, whereas Place Linked keeps it smaller.
File Dependency: Place Linked requires the original file to remain in its location, while Place Embedded does not.
Automatic Updates: Place Linked automatically updates the image if the original file changes, whereas Place Embedded does not.
In summary, Place Linked is great for when you want dynamic content that can be updated automatically, and Place Embedded is best for when you want everything to be self-contained and independent of external files.
