This spring, the Campus of the Center for Birds of Prey in Awendaw, SC is home to a pair of nesting Black Vultures (Coragyps atratus). Unlike many birds that lay eggs in nests constructed in the branches of trees, most vultures are ground nesters. In most cases, these “nests” are located under fallen trees or in tangles of vines and brush that provide security and seclusion. In this case, however, a pair of vultures chose to nest in the alcove between two of our educational display enclosures. The first egg was laid on March 17th, 2018 with the second following two days later. While the incubation time for Black vultures has not been well studied, it is estimated at between 32 and 45 days which would have the first chick hatching the week of April 23, 2018.
While we are excited to be able to share the viewing experience with you, we must caution that this is a wild nest that may be impacted by a number of variables. While we hope that both eggs will hatch and the chicks successfully fledge, a number of factors such as weather, predators, sibling rivalry and natural disasters may impact this vulture family. We are committed to watch as impartial observers and do our best to minimize our impacts on the course of nature.
