The Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (IPC) is a public higher education institution established in 1979, located in the Centre Coast of Portugal, in what has been known for centuries as the ’city of students’. It is one of the ten largest Portuguese higher education institutions, comprising six teaching facilities covering a range of fields of study: from agriculture and environment, education, communication, tourism, arts, management, and accounting and marketing, to health and engineering. Coimbra Health School is one of the schools at Polytechnic.

Professor Susana Paixao is the President of the Portuguese Society for Environmental Health and former President of the International Federation for Environmental Health. She is member of the Coordinating Council of the Observatory of the Academic Network of Health Sciences of Lusofonia (RACS) and coordinator of the Urban Health Group form the Institute of Applied Research (i2A) of the Polytechnic of Coimbra. She is also a researcher at the Center for Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning (CEGOT), and member of the Scientific Council of the Portuguese Council for Health and Environment.
