An aortic aneurysm is characterized by abnormal widening or bulging of the aorta. Aortic aneurysms typically occur in the abdominal aorta (abdominal aortic aneurysm) or the thoracic aorta (thoracic aortic aneurysm). The exact cause of aortic aneurysms is not always clear. However, the most significant risk factor is atherosclerosis (buildup of fatty plaques in the arteries). Other factors include high blood pressure, smoking, and genetic conditions.

Aortic aneurysms often grow slowly and are asymptomatic until they reach a larger size or rupture. In some cases, aneurysms may press on nearby structures leading to complications such as blood clots and embolisms, which can turn into a life-threatening emergency. Such an emergency is often associated with severe pain, sudden drop in blood pressure, and signs of internal bleeding.
