What if I told you that passwords are a thing of the past, and a more secure, convenient option is rapidly replacing them? Passkeys! In today’s NordPass passkeys tutorial, I’ll explain what those are, what benefits they bring, and how to use them.

🔑 What are PassKeys?

in the past, all you would need was a username and a password to be able to access any of your accounts. Unfortunately, this method left it easy for that information to be hacked. This method, unfortunately, means it’s quite easy for that information to be hacked. Enter Passkeys, they omit the need for a password altogether and instead require users to verify both their identity and the validity of their device. Something a standard cybercriminal would be less likely to bypass.

🛟 How do Passkeys work?

It’s actually very straightforward; whenever you sign up for an online service, the PASSKEY feature will then create both a public and private key. The public one is stored on the original website, and the private one is stored on your selected device. From here on out, whenever you log into that site, the server will first send a request to your device to confirm its legitimacy. Once that is approved, the final step is to authenticate your identity with biometrics–if the pair of keys match then you’ll be given access to your account. To make a long story short, if all the keys do not match up, PASSKEYS will not grant anyone access to the account.

The first step to this PASSKEYS TUTORIAL is to create an account on a website that currently supports Passkeys. The sign-up process can look a little different depending on each site, but you’ll likely see something similar to “Create A Passkey” or “Sign Up with A Security Device.” As an alternative to using biometric verification, some websites may request Nordpass Master Password instead.

Now I’ll show you HOW TO USE PASSKEYS if you want to change your old passwords to this easier option. Once you’ve entered your account, depending on which device you’re using you should see an option under either “Account or Security Settings.” Keep in mind, that you also have the option to have multiple different Passkeys attached to one account, as long as the website allows it.

After you’ve got all your accounts updated, where will all your NORDPASS PASSKEYS be stored? Well, on desktop and mobile devices, you’ll find them on the left-hand side under the “Passwords” tab. If you’re using the browser extension, click on the 3 lines in the top left corner, then click on Passkeys, and you’ll find all your connected accounts right there.

Benefits and Risks of Using Passkeys?

For sure the biggest advantage to using a PASSKEY PASSWORD MANAGER is the convenience–it’s quick and secure. No more scrambling your head to remember old passwords you’ve been reusing since college and no more stressing about whether or not they’ll get stolen. On the other hand, Passkeys are still a work in progress, and if you do end up losing your device it could mean losing access to your accounts since one of the crucial keys is now missing. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get completely locked out, but restoring access to them could be a hassle. Old-school passwords are not out of the game yet, but for those of you looking to jump on a more modern and secure replacement, Passkeys is an excellent choice.
