The scheme to sell fraudulent land deeds gives rise to a possible motive as to why Attorney James B Marcum, Dr. Cox, and Town Marshall James Cockrill were murdered. Also, this Syndicate may have been a huge part of why there was feuding going on in the Appalachian Mountains.
