I was in Ithaca City Court last week and a watched a number of people represent themselves in Bench trials. Going "Pro Se" is a right, you can represent yourself. The dangers of self representation are numerous:

1. Hard to remain objective
2. Difficult to present your case, your facts, and your situation without being emotional
3. General unfamiliarity with the process and procedures can be daunting
4. Hard to question yourself
5. Difficult to cross-examine police

This video highlights the problems I saw with someone representing themself on a simple cell phone violation ticket. Knowing what you can ask, what you do, and what the Judge can do or not do are just the simple basics that some people take for granted. Watching TV shows just won't cut it here.
