On the 29th of August, 1973, Pisces III, a Canadian deep-sea submersible piloted by ex-British Royal Navy officer Roger Mallinson and engineer Roger Chapman, got stuck on the seabed, approximately 1,575 feet deep and 150 miles away from the Irish coastline in the Irish Sea.

The men were undertaking a routine task to establish transatlantic telecommunication cables when the mission took a disastrous turn.

The ensuing three days drew global attention as teams of divers from Britain, America, and Canada endeavored to rescue the men from their entombed submersible, which had a mere six feet diameter.

Confronted with despair and the imminent threat of carbon dioxide poisoning, Chapman and Mallinson had to face the reality that their limited oxygen supply, enough for only 30 hours, was steadily running out.

The incident is considered as the deepest submarine rescue in history.
