The UK has announced it will officially recognise a Palestinian state for the first time. Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the move is to “revive the hope of peace.” Canada and Australia have also recognised Palestine at the same time.

But not everyone agrees, Israel’s Prime Minister says a Palestinian state would be a danger, and US President Donald Trump has said he disagrees with the UK’s decision.

BBC correspondent Jon Donnison explains what’s happened, what it means for Palestinians and Israelis, and why this is a symbolic gesture rather than a change on the ground.
