Описание к видео Matthew McManus on what liberalism and socialism can learn from each other

Donald Trump is now once again the President of the United States, but his victory in 2024 was more than just a victory for the Republican Party.

It was actually part of a larger advancement that is happening across many different countries around the world for right wing reactionism. And there is a lot to unpack with that, because really, in a lot of ways, the victories that the right wing has been having in a number of different countries represent a crisis in liberalism and a crisis in socialism, the more left wing version of liberalism.

The electoral crisis that liberalism faces is actually part of a philosophical crisis of liberalism itself. And that's because liberalism as a political philosophy has never actually fought against reactionary political philosophy. Instead, it defeated monarchism, which was an explicitly king based approach.

But reactionism, the ideas of Donald Trump and other people like him, is not explicitly pro-monarch, at least to the public. They certainly are that way in private, as many of their political theorists have freely admitted. But, understanding how to defeat a form of monarchism that argues through democratic means is proving to be an incredible challenge for liberalism and socialism.

Joining me today to talk about these challenges and the historical origins of them is Matt McManus. He is a previous guest on the show and he's got a new book that is out now called "The Political Theory of Liberal Socialism."
