In this video, we follow a group of humpback whales, as they cruise off the coast of Cape Cod. This footage was filmed on August 7th, 2020 at around 7 in the morning.

​Humpback whales got their name from the distinctive hump in front of their small dorsal fin. They often feed in large groups and are known for their singing ability.
​
​A single adult humpback is about the same size as a school bus. Yet despite their immense stature, these whales possess amazing acrobatic abilities.
​
​Here off Cape Cod, humpbacks gather during the summer months to feed on the abundant supply of fish. The whale’s menu includes krill, herring, mackerel, sand lance and many other species.
​
​The humpback has the most diverse hunting repertoire of all baleen whales. Its most inventive technique is known as bubble net feeding, which allows the whales to swallow thousands of fish in one gulp.
​
​During the 1700 and 1800’s, whaling was a commercial enterprise in the rich waters off Cape Cod, and humpback whales were hunted to near extinction. Today, humpback whales are a protected species, and Cape Cod is once again home to large numbers of humpbacks.
​
