Using Bitwarden Authenticator offline is completely possible and works reliably, as it uses time-based one-time passwords (TOTP), which do not require an internet connection to function. Once you've set up TOTP for your accounts in Bitwarden, the app will generate 6-digit authentication codes locally on your device—even when you're offline.

This is because TOTP is based on a combination of a secret key (stored in your vault) and your device’s system clock. Once a TOTP key has been added to your Bitwarden vault, the app can continue generating valid codes every 30 seconds without needing to contact any servers. This means if you're in an area with no internet access or have your phone in airplane mode, you can still retrieve 2FA codes and log in to services that require them.

To test this functionality, simply turn off your internet connection, open the Bitwarden app, and navigate to the entry for the account you’ve set up with 2FA. You’ll see the TOTP code displayed just as it would be online. You can copy this code and use it as usual to authenticate your login.

However, while code generation works offline, certain features—like syncing your vault across devices, exporting or importing vaults, or setting up new TOTP keys from QR codes stored in the cloud—require an active internet connection. If you’ve recently added a new TOTP key on another device and haven’t synced, that data won’t be available offline on your current device.
