Lesson Objective: To examine the interesting structure and content of the genealogies in Genesis 5. Main Ideas: 1) Genesis 5 is a chapter that contains the genealogies from Adam to Noah. 2) When you examine the meanings of these names in the order that they appear, you notice something interesting: it echos the coming of Christ. 3) Genesis 5 intends to get us up to the person of Noah, the next significant person that we come upon in the biblical storyline.
:::::::: LESSON NOTES ::::::::
Now usually when we come to one of the many long chapters of genealogies in the Bible, we just skip right over it to get back to the interesting stuff.
We have all done it!
Genesis 5 is one of those genealogies that you want to not do that to. This is because the people covered in Genesis 5 are significant, and even more significant are their names as well as the specific order that the names fall in. Now, meanings of Bible names are not exact and so this exercise is done with a fair bit of conjecture, but I have done my best to survey as many resources I could to ascertain the sense of the meaning of these names in Genesis 5.
What is interesting about this particular genealogy are the meanings of the names, read in the order they are given. Here are the names in Genesis 5 in order, along with their meanings:
Adam: Man, Person
Seth: set, appointed, fixed
Enosh: mortal, human, despaired
Cainan: possessor, purchaser
Mahalel: praise, praising God
Jared: coming down, slave
Enoch: dedicated, disciplined
Methuselah: he has sent his death
Lamech: poor, made low
Noah: rest, consolation
Now, what happens if you just read the meanings, and put them into a sentence? What you have is: a man, who is set, appointed or fixed, who was mortal, human and despaired, who was also a posessor or purchaser praising God, coming down as a slave, dedicated and disciplined who has sent his death, and who was poor and brought low and who brought rest and consolation.
Hmm…sound like anybody we know?
There are of course other ways of interpreting these names, but it sure is interesting that the names, when read in order seem to give hints and details of the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. Again, just conjecture. But it sure is interesting.
