Erie Current War - Project Algerine

The Erie Current War, an early example of a technical revolution, saw Erie become one of the earliest electrified cities in the world. This was made possible by Thomas Edison's vast improvements to the incandescent light bulb in 1879, paving the way for lighting with electricity. The newly created Erie County Light Company secured a building on Peach Street between 10th and 11th, bringing in two new engines and adding another dynamo. The power station's first commercial customers were two stores bordering State Street owned by James Carney and Frank Niebauer. The street lights in Erie turned on for the first time on September 2, 1884, an immediate success leading to the adoption of electric light in playhouses and theatre groups. In 1887, the power plant came under the control of Edison Electric, and by 1891, it was ready to move to its new location at the corner of East 12th and French Street.
