I've had a helluva music career. Frontman, sideman, session man, producer, writer, composer, arranger. I've been one of the luckiest SOBs on the planet.
In the early 2000s, I played the first 3 Rockabilly Hall of Fame festivals. For me, this was a dream come true! Not only did I get to hear and meet many of my rockabilly faves, I got to work with a lot of them too. Here's where experience comes in. NO REHEARSALS! If we were lucky, we got a few minutes to learn the songs (keys, intros/outros, stops, etc). Sometimes we didn't even get that. When we got to back up Rayburn Anthony in 2002 at The Carl Perkins Civic Center, we got a quick introduction. He gave me his latest CD (Jackson Was Jumping), told me what songs he'd like to do - and we did our best to get it done and quickly. We were backing a few other artists, so we had our work cut out for us. To top it all off, our regular drummer couldn't make it, so my buddy Steve Sicurella (who I'd played with in The Swingin' Caddilacs) agreed to fill in. I think it's fair to say we all had a blast. Rayburn was one of the nicest guys and so easy to work with. Did we do his songs note-for-note like the record? Nope. Did we make it work? I think so.
For years I was told this footage didn't exist. I knew that was a lie. I saw the cameras. Over the years, friends have sent me clips. I lucked out and found this stuff the other night. It's nice to see and hear it all these years later. I hope you'll enjoy it!
