Hello everyone. I have grown a few hybrid tomatoes this season and Red Profusion is one of them If you saw the video, you see what an amazing tomato it is. It is coming back to the market big time again as a popular basket tomato. I wanted to make a video to discuss hybrid seeds and start testing the possibility that Red Profusion could be a stable hybrid. If it is, the seeds from my current plant would regrow next time and produce exactly the same type of plant and fruit for my garden.
We normally do not collect seeds from hybrid plants. Unlike heirloom seeds, the seeds from these plants normally won't produce any fruit or produce fruit similar to the original parent plants that were crossed. For example, Sun Sugar is a wonderful hybrid orange cherry. I will have a description for that soon. Seeds collected from this hybrid will not make Sun Sugar. Instead, the plant would regress to the original parental types that were crossed to make the hybrid seeds. That being said, I read that Red Profusion seeds can grow up to F4 generation, producing the exact tomato plant and fruit. today, I am starting my testing of this notion, by collecting and putting seeds from my current plant. Remember my plant is from F1 seed, so it is an F2 generation, producing F2 seeds. I guess I am hoping for F3 generation to be exactly like my plant. It is just an experiment, and It is a long way to go, but it is exciting to see.
Pedigree is a chart that shows the parent plants or animals being crossed. It shows the Parents, the cross, the first generation from them and the generations after that. The Red Profusion F1 seeds are from a hybrid cross. This process is expensive and takes a long time, up to 10 years to complete. I believe that Red Profusion is developed by the U.K., and I see how it is made to help with small space gardening and abundant production. F1 seeds are available on Etsy, Amazon, and many growers/companies. The tomato has a good size, flavor, texture, lasting on the vine, and abundance of clusters. See my video on Red Profusion, in my Sunday's PLANT OF THE WEEK series. If you know people who have limited spaces, such as patios and balconies, encourage them to watch my video (Video 34, and 33) to learn about his amazing tomato.
I love heirlooms, and I respect them for the heritage and history that they carry for us and with us. I recently found some Abe Lincoln tomato seeds, originally sold in 1923! It is another heirloom tomato with years of improvement and legacy. Large Fruited cherry and Yellow Grape are some heirloom cherry tomatoes that I planted in the Spring of 2022, and I am beginning to harvest. I am going to put description for those in the upcoming videos. Hope the information on the pedigree, heirloom, hybrid, and GMO seeds was helpful. Thanks for visiting my garden. Tell others about Gardening Adventures and small space gardening tours, plants, tutorials, and experiments!
