Auroville is an experimental township in Viluppuram district mostly in the state of Tamil Nadu, India with some parts in the Union Territory of Puducherry in India. It was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa (known as "the Mother") and designed by architect Roger Anger. As stated in Alfassa's first public message in 1965:
“Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realize human unity”.

Auroville is organized as an international community and governed by the Auroville Foundation, under the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India. It is recognized as an "International Township" and has its own constitution, aiming to ensure that all residents have equal rights and opportunities. The architecture of Auroville reflects its ideals of sustainability and harmony with nature. The township is known for its unique and innovative buildings, combining traditional and modern techniques. Matrimandir, a prominent landmark of Auroville, is a golden spherical structure that serves as a meditation centre and focal point for the community.
