Unbelievably underrated and rare, the illusive Maxon VOP-9 Vintage Overdrive Pro is without a doubt one of the best drive pedals to ever grace the electric guitar. Clean or dirty amp, with single coils or humbuckers, alone or stacked, it manages to amaze with only three knobs!

Most transparent setting:
drive at zero, tone and volume at noon

yes, it's True Bypass
yes, the switch is awesome, just press it like you mean it
no, it's not very transparent, it will shave off some high presence but:
yes, it's A LOT more transparent than a Tube Screamer
yes, it has A LOT of volume, be careful with it and the tone knob on a clean amp
the tone knob is quite interesting: your low end stays the same at all settings, it only affects mids and highs. From 3 o'clock to MAX, expect a SUBSTANTIAL increase in GAIN
drive knob goes from 100% clean signal and 0 drive signal to 100% drive signal and no clean signal
with the drive and tone at MAX you will get into high gain (just remember to roll of some of the highs, especially on a strat)
into a clean amp, try brightening the tone by turning the volume knob higher before fiddling with the tone knob. It's one of these pedals SECRETS TO GREAT TONES!
into a distorted amp, it's simply sublime, probably the best boost, ever. There's not a bad tone to be had here, just don't dime all the knobs at once, the feedback will be fierce.


VOLTAGE FAQ:
yes, it has an internal charge pump to bump the voltage to 18V
NO, DO NOT CONNECT IT TO AN 18V power supply!
yes, you can also run it at 9V if you flick the internal switch
yes the switch can be reached from the battery compartment, but be careful with it, it's a tiny plastic switch which requires finesse and a fingernail
in short, 9V has more breakup, 18V has more volume, both sound different and awesome (in depth video on that and other aspects will follow soon)
yes, it runs on a 9V battery at 18V (internal charge pump) for quite a while
no, it has no battery sag even at 6.83V left! The LED will not light up at that point, but the pedal will still work for a little while longer. You can use up almost depleted batteries on this pedal, think of it as kinda-recycling haha!
