It's possible to set the idle speed on a late-model Ironhead quite low so it potatoes like a big twin from the era, but this is a bad idea; XLH engines can't take the pistons slapping around in this unruly fashion for long. I don't have a rev counter, but the overall vibe you're looking for is two skeletons shagging on a tin roof and approaching climax. A '79 to '81 Ironhead is essentially a tuned-down XLCR Cafe Racer, so the closer it sounds to a road drill the better.
