Amid rising Russia-NATO tensions, Denmark and Norway temporarily shut down their busiest airports on September 22 following drone sightings. Copenhagen Airport reported two to three large, non-commercial drones flying nearby, while Oslo Gardermoen Airport later detected a drone over its airspace, forcing operational suspensions. Authorities in both countries are cooperating to determine if the incidents are connected. Separately, two foreign nationals were arrested in Oslo for flying drones near a military site. Danish police noted that the drones appeared to have been operated by a skilled individual, though no suspects have been formally identified. The shutdowns disrupted tens of thousands of passengers as flights were diverted. These events follow a series of alleged Russian airspace violations, including MiG-31 jets entering Estonian airspace on September 19 and drone incursions over Poland and Romania. NATO has responded with heightened vigilance, launching missions such as “Eastern Sentry” to secure borders near Ukraine and deter further provocations.
