STORYLINE
The death toll in a devastating blaze at a trade fair in north India rose to 52 on Tuesday while people struggled to find their relatives among the charred bodies.
At least 200 people were injured by flames or trampled on Monday as flames swept through giant exhibition tents at a consumer electronics show in the dusty rural town of Meerut, about 400 kilometres (250 miles) from the city of Lucknow.
Witnesses described a horrific scene, with screaming injured people, three enormous tents destroyed and rescuers pulling out corpse after corpse.
"It was like a stampede...everyone was frantically looking for their loved ones," said one witness.
At least 22 ambulances ferried the injured to hospitals in the area, officials said.
Most of the corpses were found near the exits.
"The fire began from the last stall and within five minutes the entire structure was engulfed by flames....The exit gate had the maximum number of dead bodies and they were pulled out one by one," said another witness.
Several people died overnight from their wounds.
While police scoured the ruins, desperate relatives went from hospital to hospital, looking for missing relatives.
Most of the bodies were completely charred, making it difficult for the relatives to identify them.
It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, though a local politician told Headlines Today TV station that it may have started when plastic sheeting hanging over an air-conditioning unit caught fire.
Other officials said the fire may have been sparked by a short circuit.
The state government announced that an official investigation would be launched and said compensation would be paid to the families.
But a witness had doubts an investigation would take place.
"The biggest problem is that there have been so many tragedies like this but the government does not want to learn from them. They do not want to pay attention. Whichever government it is, they only say they will institute an enquiry but no result ever comes out," the witness said.
It was the first large-scale fair to be held in Meerut.
