To understand it, let’s rewind a bit. In the early 2000s, NASA was working on the Constellation Program, an ambitious plan to return humans to the Moon and eventually send them to Mars. Constellation included two rockets: Ares 1 for crew and Ares 5 for cargo. Both reused components from the Space Shuttle but were configured differently. However, by 2010, an independent review concluded that Constellation was too expensive and unsustainable, especially with NASA also maintaining the International Space Station and retiring the Shuttle. As a result, the program was canceled, leaving NASA without a clear path forward for human spaceflight.

Not long after, Congress stepped in. They told NASA to build a new heavy-lift rocket, one capable of lifting at least 130 tons to low Earth orbit, just like the old Saturn 5. What most people don’t realize is that the search for this rocket’s design actually started even before Constellation was officially canceled. In 2009, NASA launched an internal study to explore different heavy-lift vehicle concepts for the future of human spaceflight.
They looked at everything from hydrogen-fueled rockets with solid boosters, similar to the Space Shuttle, to powerful kerosene-based rockets that echoed the Saturn 5. Some designs even considered bringing back the mighty F-1 engine or creating upgraded versions like the F-1A and F-1B.
