In the sultry August heat of Central Florida, preparing a flower bed is a labor of love, steeped in sweat and anticipation. Last season’s seeds, carefully harvested from marigolds and zinnias, rest in labeled packets, their promise of renewal tucked away in a cool, dry drawer. Spring gladiolus bulbs, dormant now, are gently lifted from the earth, their papery husks stored in mesh bags to cool back down in the refrigerator for winter replanting. As I dig and clear, a serendipitous discovery: a wayward asparagus crown, its feathery fronds and sturdy roots thriving defiantly in the market garden. Its delicate, fern-like beauty, misplaced yet resilient, sparks a quiet joy, a reminder of nature’s knack for surprise amidst the orderly chaos of gardening.
