This four-part series examines major concepts all prospective patients should understand. Part Three discusses risk/benefit analyses based on the principle of informed consent, and emphasizes that the best resource for anticipating and mitigating potential side effects is an experienced clinician; encyclopedic sources like the Physician's Desk Reference (PDR) and Web M.D., and the internet in general, are of limited value in determining which side effects are most probable from among all those that are possible. Specific variables, including starting and maximum doses, the titration schedule, individual demographics, co-morbid conditions, concomitantly administered medications, etc. all affect the tolerability outcome and must be taken into account by the prescriber.
