What do I pot my orchid in!? Bark? Moss? Perlite? Out of the bag orchid mix?

This week Plant Lovers I felt the urge to take a close look at the different types of potting media I use and what sort of orchids I use each one for. The reason being I started my orchid growing journey knowing NOTHING and using out-of-the-bag hardware store 'orchid mix'. Well....I have learned a bit since then but there is STILL a place in my heart, and potting shed, for a pre mixed out-of-the-bag 'orchid mix'! So let's go medium by medium and I'll share what I use each for and why. Now I must add, this is just what I use in my environment for my orchids and depending upon where you are and the system you use that could be very different for you! 4:19 bagged regular 'orchid mix' - I use for Cymbidiums & Australian natives
10:01 large bark pieces - I use for orchids with strong roots and quick dryers
13:12 medium bark pieces - I use for most orchids - Oncidium alliance etc
14:17 small bark pieces - I use for orchids with fine roots & miniature orchids
15:49 using pumice stone in a potting mix - I use it for lithophytes & Vandas
18:04 sphagnum moss - used for Phalaenopsis, seedlings & mixed with bark
21:57 charcoal - used in a mix with bark & sphagnum moss
22:53 perlite - used in a mix with bark & sphagnum moss & charcoal
24:04 shell grit - used as a topping for added calcium
24:30 Mycorrhizal fungi powder - used in all pots as a soil conditioner
25:02 slow release fertiliser pellets - used in all pots & seasonally
25:22 coconut fibre - used for lining Vanda & Dendrobium baskets
26:27 clay (!) used in a mix for certain Australian terrestrial native species
