As health workers in Afghanistan struggle to combat a deadly third wave of COVID-19, a shipment of 1.48 million vaccine doses donated by the United States through the COVAX Facility arrived in Kabul on July 9, 2021. A second shipment is expected later in the month, bringing the total donation to around 3.3 million doses.

"With over 2,000 cases of COVID per day and less than 4 percent of the population vaccinated, it is critical that these doses get to the most vulnerable people in Afghanistan; the elderly, the frontline health workers, and, critically, teachers, so that we can get schools open and children back to school ," says Sam Mort, UNICEF Afghanistan Chief of Communications.

UNICEF will work with partners to see that the vaccine reaches people across Afghanistan, including those living in hard-to-reach areas. As a key partner in COVAX, UNICEF coordinates procurement and delivery of COVID-19 vaccine doses to low- and middle-income countries and prepares communities with reliable information on the safety and efficacy of vaccines, encouraging those eligible to get vaccinated at the first available opportunity.
