Nando Mejia

He was born in the southern Amazon of Ecuador, in the province of Morona Santiago, on the border with Peru. He grew up among trees, animals, reptiles, birds and insects. The songs, screams, murmurs of the forest was his first native music.
He has been building musical instruments since he was a teenager, he started as an amateur with Andean wind instruments such as the Quena, the Rondador, the Zampoña, but it was with the construction of the Charangos that he took to the manufacture of string instruments, and it was his introduction to the classical guitar and the Professional Lutheran. During this period, Nando had already migrated to urban life where he had the opportunity to play as a musician and participate in some Andean folk groups.
At the beginning of this century he was totally focused on the study of the classical guitar and from the beginning he was always interested in its constructive structure, its design and its technical-acoustic projection. The guitar seduced him with its magical polyphony and that meant he couldn't part with it. He built his first guitar for him in 1994, it was very basic but very emotional, then he made others for close musician friends, all with native woods.
Before making guitars professionally, there was a natural process of practice and knowledge, and going back to the beginning, everything took him back to the forest, and Nando studied in detail the wood flora of his region and country, the ecological floors where he grew up, the characteristics of noise and wood density, cutting, drying and conservation.
His path as a guitarist and musician helped him to illuminate his experience as a professional luthier, also his wanderings around the world, especially in North America, brought him closer to seeing the guitar in a more universal way, even to investigate more in the traditional Spanish and French school. , and mainly in the approach of the contemporary classical guitar that is widespread in the USA and mainly in Canada. Who motivated him to dedicate himself to modern construction was the Brazilian luthier Regis Bonilla who helped him take the leap and introduce him to the new sound, brightness and versatility of today's guitars.
At the beginning of his career he made replicas of the best known luthiers in Spain and France, that is, he inevitably followed in the footsteps of Torres, Fletas, Bouchet and Friederich. He was very influenced by the French school of construction for liking the shine, elegance and finish. Then he experimented with the contemporary until he got to know the Australian school, building hybrid tops, using the Lattice system but not with carbon fiber, the bodywork is basically traditional, but it is always experimenting with new techniques.
Nando believes that building guitars is using practical techniques and theoretical (scientific) knowledge. The artistic part comes later, the creative and expressive direction you want to show, this is the mark that Luthier should mark. From a technical-acoustic point of view, his guitars will always be in search of the musician's musical demand and from an aesthetic-expressive point of view, they will always communicate something. That's the personality of their guitars.
One of his motivations that he tries to imprint on the guitars is the human-nature part, as a response to this metabolic rupture that we are experiencing, this rupture of separating humans from Pachamama. In his Rosettes, he seeks to show that it is vital and necessary to build a sustainable system between the countryside and the city, and technological development must help in this.
He makes guitars to return to the forest the sounds of the birds that sang in its branches.
He played classical guitar, played professionally in groups and as a soloist for a few years, but when he dedicated himself more to building guitars, he only plays occasionally, due to the time and work he takes up in the Workshop.
When he lived abroad, three times, he was always building, mainly in the USA. Already shipped guitars to USA, Belgium, Germany, France, Peru.
Nando thinks that a guitar is something intimate and personal, which should give the guitarist ease of playing, technical requirements, brightness, sound balance, which contributes to his personality as an artist.
