A shocking incident took place inside the Supreme Court of India on October 6, when Advocate Rakesh Kishore (71) attempted to throw his shoe at Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai during an open court hearing.

Kishore, a registered member of the Supreme Court Bar Association and resident of Mayur Vihar, approached the dais, removed his sports shoe, and hurled it toward the CJI. Security personnel quickly intervened, preventing any harm. As he was escorted out, he was heard shouting: “Sanatan ka apmaan nahi sahenge.”

The incident is believed to have been triggered by CJI Gavai’s earlier remarks in a case regarding the restoration of a beheaded 7-foot idol of Lord Vishnu in Khajuraho. While dismissing the case, the CJI had said:
“Go and ask the deity itself to do something now. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. So go and pray now. It’s an archaeological site and ASI needs to give permission, etc.”

These comments had caused an online backlash, with many accusing the CJI of hurting religious sentiments. In response, CJI Gavai later clarified in open court: “I respect all religions. This happened on social media.”

Following the shoe-throwing incident, the Bar Council of India (BCI) suspended Rakesh Kishore from practice with immediate effect. The suspension bars him from appearing, acting, pleading, or practising before any court, tribunal, or authority in India.

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) also condemned the act, calling it a direct assault on judicial independence and a disgrace to the legal profession.
