The fourth roundtable on Ethics of genome editing on the theme “Equal Access and Governance” focused on the discussion on building equitable and inclusive governance of the genome editing technologies. The roundtable was organized online on 20 January 2022.

In which way and to which extent are we allowed to modify characteristics and functions of existing living organisms? What is the difference between transgenic animals and genome edited animals? What are the benefits and the risks? Are there cultural limits to science?

Genome editing techniques promise to treat some genetic diseases such as beta-thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, and certain type of blindness. Not in ten or five years. It is happening now. This is why governance and regulations are urgent matter. They ensure fair and equitable access to new treatments.

This event is the fourth and final part of a series of roundtables launched by UNESCO in 2018 to sensitize policy-makers, researchers and the general public on the ethical challenges of genome editing.
